The ENEMY ALIEN project

After meeting Walter Sekules and his wife Moira, the writer Csilla Toldy - whose Grandmother Julianna had sheltered Jews during the Hungarian Pogrom - became interested in their life story and how the family had fled their native Vienna when Germany invaded Austria. Working with Walter, Csilla learned how he had lived with his family for many years in Soviet detention camps in Kazakhstan as ‘Enemy Aliens’ and how, after the war they had eventually come to live in Kilkeel, County Down where his mother established a knitting factory. Together Walter and Csilla conceived the idea of a book written for young people, Sadly Walter died before the book was completed, but with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Sekules family the book was finally published by Light Theatre Company in 2024
