Bloomsday ’23 in Rostrevor, Co. Down. North of Ireland

In the ‘Sirens’ episode Ulysses Miss Douce, a barmaid at the Ormond Hotel tells Simon Dedalus that whilst holidaying in Rostrevor she got a ’bronze tan’ on the Strand.

The celebrations commenced at Warrenpoint Library on Wednesday June 14th at 6pm with a stimulating and informative talk: “Joyce in Bloom” by Dr Niall Kennedy. Dr Kennedy had recently been appointed as the new Branch Manager and turns out to be a Joycian scholar with a deep understudying of the Ulysses text. We look forward to many more talks and discussions led by him next year. Niall’s talk was complimented with beautiful songs from local musician Joanne Fox.

Unfortunately the sunshine on the Strand on Friday 16th retired behind clouds and instead of the hoped for gathering outside we moved into the main hall at An Cuan where tables with nibbles were rapidly laid out and Sinéad Lunny, Colum Sands, Cathal McCabe, Mathew McGrath, Joanna Fox and Fil Campbell entertained the capacity crowd with readings, songs, stories and a performance of the Sirens Episode by Seán Treanor, Treasa Davey and Donal O’Hanlon of Newpoint Players.

Sunday afternoon 18th June at Fearon’s Pub (known to all as ‘Henry’s) in Rostrevor Square.

An afternoon of poetry, readings from Joyce, music and song as well as prizes for the children who dressed up. We were favoured with glorious sunshine requiring liberal libations to quench the thirst - for the adults not the children - they got ice creams
