Recreate Rostrevor 1904
Historic Walks and Photographic Exhibition

Funded by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and hosted by Light Theatre Company, The Joyce in Rostrevor Festival celebrated the village’s special connection with the world’s greatest novel, James Joyce’s Ulysses. It was in the summer of 1904 that Miss Lydia Douce came for a holiday in Rostrevor, the only place in the north of Ireland visited by a named character from Ulysses.

Historic Walk

People who joined Peter McGrath on his easy walk around historic Rostrevor, reported on how knowledgeable Peter was and how this brought the Vllage to life in new and informative ways. The walk took in the places that Miss Douce would have visited in 1904 had she stepped out of the pages of James Joyce’s novel to enjoy this beautiful Village. The walk took in The Glenmore Hotel (now An Cuan), The Tramlines near McGinns, KIlbroney Park, Rostrevor Square and Bridge Street together with the two Churches and other places that Miss Douce and other holidaymakers would have seen when Rostrevor was a noted destination.

Historic Photo Exhibition

The exhibition was opened on Saturday 3rd February by Valerie Harte, Chairperson, Newry Mourne and Down District Council

One of the highlights of the photo exhibition is the ten original photographs of Edwardian Rostrevor, together with photos at the same locations as they are today; including individuals or groups of people in ‘Edwardian’ costume.

The Exhibition closed on Saturday February 24th but the work is available to local groups for exhibition purposes.
